The One Who jumped down
For three days, a man was trapped in a deep hole.
At first, he shouted for help. Then he tried climbing out. Again and again, he slipped back into the darkness. His hands were torn, his body ached, and his hope was fading.
On the first day, a doctor passed by.
Looking down, he saw the man's injuries and tossed a prescription into the hole.
"If you ever get out," he said, "come and see me. I know exactly how to heal your wounds."
Then he walked away.
The man looked at the paper lying in the mud. It was of no use to him.
The next day, another traveler stopped.
After hearing the man's story, he became angry.
"This is wrong," he said. "Someone must have dug this hole. When you get out, I will make sure justice is served."
Then he, too, continued on his journey.
The man watched him disappear into the distance.
By the third night, he had lost all hope.
Looking up at the tiny circle of sky above him, he whispered, "God, I don't think anyone is coming. If I die here, please let my family find me. Let them know I thought of them until the end."
A tear rolled down his face.
Then he closed his eyes.
Suddenly, he heard footsteps.
He barely looked up. He had heard promises before.
A stranger stood at the edge of the hole and looked down.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then, to the man's surprise, the stranger jumped into the hole.
The trapped man stared at him in disbelief.
"What are you doing?" he cried. "Now we're both trapped!"
The stranger smiled.
"Maybe," he said. "But you looked like you needed someone."
The two men sat together in silence.
For the first time in days, the trapped man no longer felt alone.
Then the stranger stood up and pointed toward a narrow opening hidden behind a cluster of rocks.
"I noticed something when I came down," he said. "Let's see where it leads."
Together, they cleared the rocks and crawled through the opening. After what seemed like hours, a faint light appeared ahead.
Moments later, they emerged from the hillside into the warmth of a new morning.
The trapped man fell to his knees, overwhelmed with gratitude.
He had spent three days looking up, hoping someone would lower a rope.
He never imagined that hope would come by someone climbing down.
As they walked away together, he realized something he would never forget:
Hope arrives in unexpected ways. Sometimes it does not come as a miracle from above. Sometimes it comes as a person willing to step into your darkness and help you find the light.
